Naturalization

To change your nationality to Japanese, to become a naturalized citizen, the following requirements must be met;

1. The applicant has lived in Japan continuously for at least five years
2. The applicant is over 20 and understands Japanese laws
3. The applicant has good behavior
4. The applicant has a means to provide for their life in Japan. A specialized skill, a spouse, family or investments
5. The applicant will renounce citizenship of their former country once receiving Japanese citizenship

There are more qualifications and rules separate from the ones listed above, so even if the above points are fulfilled that does not automatically guarantee naturalization.
